Part II Learning data - You are the pie for a machine learning API

Learning any data? In the previous blog I ended with the question ”Are you moving away from data and focusing on growing up by creating some learning awareness? ”.

Learning awareness

Learning awareness needs an introduction. In the book “Being Digital” Negroponte wrote about innovation differences between time generations. He compared an apple pie in the sixties with the nineteens. Then he discusses the differences between bits and atoms. Atoms make up physical tangible objects such as Pie, DVDs, books and letters. Digital information, on the other hand, is made up of bits, the smallest unit of information on a computer. He believed in the previous century that all forms of information that are now made of atoms (books, DVDs, etc.) will eventually be made into bits. Any data, the bits, are input for a computer learning. For a computer it is difficult to discover that the pie Negroponte is writing about is the same human innovation in a different era of time. The computer skill lacking here is the imaginary time traveler.

Exponential learning from any data.

Ask a master teacher, and  learn guidance is given. Teachers and parents have been fine tuning growing-up art for years. Today this learning is enhanced with Internet (E-learning/YouTube). When you exponentially reason the popular expression that claims that "all words ever spoken by human beings" could be stored in approximately 5 exabytes you know why Robot number 5 wants more learning input.

People however are not like robots, such as number 5, having limitless data learning ability. We prefer a grow learning cycle with a certain pace. Every person has a learning style. Either auditory, visual, or tactile. The auditory learners learn by hearing and listening. The visual learners learn by reading or seeing imagery. The tactile learners learn by doing something that involves touching. Today’s world of change is going so fast that new ways of pace learning have arrived. Learning styles unify towards a personalized style, e.g. “Exponential multi learning”. Instead of just using one style of learning a computer can assist all these styles simultaneously. You can tune the best way of moving your thinking forward.

A new view on guilds of Mastery

I think that learning pie business is like learning a craftsmanship art. A master chef can teach me about creating fine pie flavors. Having taken my first lessons I try to create a Foreburgh’s Klinkertje. The first , second and third pie are all experimental. I’m proud baking them, but when presenting them to a master taster, my son I hear it’s a disaster. Hopefully in time I am capable of baking a good pie. Although my achievable pie might not be the world favorite, for me it’s a masterpiece. Lucky I do have a time constraint. My brain can’t master computer science and pie baking at the same time. That’s why I ask my bakery to bake our pie’s. In history when you want to learn you were lucky when you could find a fine master to teach you well. For great craft professions like bakery, meat, cutting knives, and smith I see a parallel with machine intelligence and learning. The bits software underneath has a similarity to atom people craftsmanship. The debat between parallel learning has just begun, and is an interesting new social science area. A computer is a global earth listener for you. It’s learning craft listens to a human touch, but who was your master when you are parallel learning together?

Life recording legacy

It is a way of understanding of how technology can change your life. In the previous century Moore’s crade to cradle law tells us that the world you were born in, will not be the same world when you die. The exponential curve of innovation, speeds up your learning ability. To give you an example of computation ability today.  A human brain's ability to store memories is equivalent to about 2.5 petabytes of binary data. In 2007 the estimated information content of all human knowledge was 295 exabytes. From a technical element point of view Artificial Learning is all about juggling +/- 300 exabytes of spoken languages per second. There is no computational barrier for computers to continuously learn from people anymore.  I like to inspire you with a bigdata thought from Wouter de Bie, arguing changing the flow of data. What happens when computing ( and learning) is brought to data, instead of us bringing data to computing and learning.  Still grasping this thought.

Share your thoughts, keep your fantasy.

The distinction between the atoms and bits world has disappeared comparing today with the nineteens. For generation Z the real world is digital native. Taking a bits picture is just a smartphone snapshot ready to be valuable for sharing. Or you could stream what you’re doing. In the atoms world taking an analog picture was hard. A craft artist knew how to balance light and chemistry to record a beautiful visual moment. These skilled photographers are shrinking, due to that knowledge of balancing light has been translated into hard-/software algorithms. Today we still have this knowledge but how did the Maya record their knowledge?

Remembering craft skills is difficult. The computer learning model can predict skill, but cannot quite replace an individual artist. While a teen rediscovered Maya knowledge, some fine arts have flown away with time. Talking about the good and bad in the atoms world has a different flow than its digital counterpart. The best answer for skill innovation is sharing intelligence (bits and atoms). This is the parallel learning debate to be discussed at a kitchen table. Organize your computer AI to assist your business ambitions.
